Google Talk + Pidgin = FriendFeed Posting

May 21st, 2008

Perhaps this is well known, but I just realized I can use my Pidgin status message to post quickly to my FriendFeed.
After I installed Pidgin’s RhythmBox plug-in to share what I was listening to, I noticed when I checked my FriendFeed later that all of the songs that had appeared in my status bar were popping up on FF when I was logged into my GoogleTalk account.
So, when I noticed that twitter had gone down again I quickly typed “Twitter down again” into my status bar and presto - there it was on FriendFeed.
Sure, there are things like AlertThingy that can post directly to FF but, frankly, I don’t have AlertThingy open all that often. I usually use twhirl for twitters which end up on FF anyway. Pidgin is always open and firing off a quick message to FF using the status bar is so easy it’s almost an afterthought.

I’m not saying I’m going to use pidgin as a FF broadcaster. But it’ll do in a pinch.
