Goodbye Turkey! My Lawyer Will Be in Touch

Very sad to see that the great Jerry Reed died yesterday. Back in the 70’s Jerry became a ‘personality’. Back then there were celebrities that so many appearances they were just famous for being themselves. Jerry was one of them.

But before the Scooby-Doo episodes and the novelty songs about trucking he was a musician. One of THE most underrated guitar pickers in history. Most people don’t even realize he played guitar. But he was always one of my guitar heroes along with Chet Atkins.

I also loved his songs! My Dad was a big country fan so I heard a lot of him on WMZQ in the 80’s. His songs were deceptively simple, often sounding like comedy records but upon closer inspection had an everyman frustration about them that spoke to many people.

He also appeared in one of my favorite movies, “The Survivors” with Robin Williams and Walter Matthau.

Unfortunately in todays world, the passing of a guy like Jerry Reed will largely go unnoticed. We’re too cool for that kind of thing these days. But I just wanted to say “So long turkey!” to one of my childhood faves.
