A few facts you may want to consider before electing the next megalomaniac to the presidency.
Obama is NOT Clinton.
Some poor misguided soul tried to convince me of Obama’s superiority by asking me if I was better off under Clinton or Bush. Now, most people will understand how uninformed this question is and that the fact that I am quite a bit better off now than I was in the 90’s has little to do with either men, with the possible exception that I was in radio in the 90’s which was deregulated under Clinton which cost many of us our jobs. (much of the deregulation that happened under Clinton Obama wants to reverse) Clinton was a moderate with a Republican Congress, Obama is an extreme leftist who will have nearly unchecked power.
But let’s talk numbers. First, capital gains. Clinton LOWERED capital gains to 20%, Bush lowered it to 15%, in both cases when the rate dropped, revenues from the tax increased; the government took in more money. However, Obama wants to raise it. Why? Because, and I quote, “…I’ve said is that I would look at raising the capital gains tax for purposes of fairness. . . . We saw an article today which showed that the top 50 hedge fund managers made $29 billion last year - $29 billion for 50 individuals. And part of what has happened is that those who are able to work the stock market and amass huge fortunes on capital gains are paying a lower tax rate than their secretaries. That’s not fair.”
In other words, he’s willing to sacrifice government income, which WILL result in higher taxes, because he feels people making money honestly by having the means and the know-how to use the system should be punished for making money. It’s not “fair” therefore he will force it to be fair. Obama’s idea of “fair” is akin to forcing Randy Moss to wear 10-pound ankle bracelets if the Pats play the Saints because the Saints secondary is the worst in the NFL and that’s not “fair”. It’s the same as having a company that tries to deny its affiliates their percentages because you’re worried they’re making too much money. Never realizing that when they make money YOU make money. (This allegory may seem convoluted but I have actually worked for a guy who tried this)
Now, let’s talk about his “spread the wealth” talk. First of all all of Obama’s talk of the wealthy not paying taxes is completely false. He is either a liar or WOEFULLY misinformed, because a quick check of the latest IRS data will show you that the share of the federal income tax paid by the top 1 percent of tax returns reached an all-time high — 40%! (3% higher than they paid during the Clinton administration btw). The top 50% actually pay 97% of the tax in this country. What’s fair? 100%?
Obama’s plan, or the closest you can find to an actual plan from him, calls for the top 5% of the country to pay a trillion dollars. Not going to happen. Your taxes will go up.
“millions for charity but not one cent for tribute”
Now, I’m not exactly raking in the dough these days. If Obama’s plan were realistic or feasible in any way I would be one of the families he says he wants to help. But even if I did believe him, I can’t condone forcible socialism, even in my own interests. The beauty of America is freedom. I was brought up Catholic (still am actually) and, in spite of what popular culture seems to think, that meant lots of “love thy neighbor” and “do unto others” I spent many teenage weekends delivering food, working in shelters and going to racial harmony meetings through the church. What I’m saying is I was raised to put others before me. To give to others, and I still try to live that way. I believe in community and charity. The difference between me and Obama is I also believe in my neighbor’s right to be as stingy with his own money as he wants to be. If you have the brains or the talent or the luck to achieve the American dream and make your fortune, then you have every right to pinch every penny you have until your fingers fall off if that’s your desire. You are FREE to do what you will be a king or be a bum. You are free to work hard and make millions, you are free to give those millions away and you are free to have all your money stuffed in your coffin and, yes, sometimes people work hard and fail it is a by-product of free will. That should not be sacrificed in the interest of the fairytale of government enforced “fairness”! Obama doesn’t think so, he thinks you should give away what you “don’t need”. (Or rather what he decides you don’t need) and the government should take it from you if you refuse and he has openly talked about changing the Constitution to do that. (His willingness to stomp all over the Constitution is amusing in the sense that most of his supporters accused Bush of the very same thing every time the man cleared his throat.) That’s not freedom.
“millions for charity but not one cent for tribute”
I admire his idealism. I share some of it on a personal level. But the difference is, I believe in an individuals right to their idealism and their right to try and influence others, not in forcing idealism on others by law or might.
I’m not even addressing his laughable foreign policies. Remeber his claim that we don’t have to worry about Iran because it’s not that big of a country? Laughable as long as you’re not Israel that is.
Or his “One million teachers” claim which is either another display of his lack of understanding of the president’s job or another lie. (Federal government can send money for schools but it is up to your state and localities how many teachers you have and federal money ALWAYS comes with strings - ask the one million cops)
Or the poor Iraqis. Caught in the middle of a war for so many years, with some progress finally being made they will be abandoned in - what did he say ‘30 days’ - which will result in thousands being killed, millions being displaced and Iran waltzing in.
Or even his dangerous flat out hatred of the second amendment. He will be the most anti-gun president we have ever had. You may not be a gun fan - but if one freedom is trampled all will be. See how long the first amendment will last without the second.
So, this is the man that will be elected President tomorrow, and don’t kid yourself Obama will win tomorrow. By a near landslide. I lost my faith in the American voter in 2004. A year I voted for Kerry. NOT because I thought he would be a good president, but because I knew Bush would bring us to this terrible moment. You can’t rely on a panicked mob to think an election through.
Obama’s momentum is too great and too set in feelings. The Obama movement has succeeded in creating an unthinking and fanatical movement playing on the hopes and fears of a desperate country. I actually admire what they pulled off. A man who, looked at logically, has no business anywhere near the White House has been able to whip up the nation into a frenzy of blind faith and celebrity worship worthy of an Amewrican Idol winner. It’s impressive, sad and dangerous all at the same time. I have seen people that I used to think were generally level-headed people even when we disagreed disintegrate into jabbering kool-aid gulping fanatics about this guy no matter what he says. I’ve seen people waering Obama t-shirts like he was a movie star. You can’t fight that kind of unthinking blind-faith. So, he’s the next president and tomorrow they will all stand, teary eyed, staring in awe at their leader, feeling like they accomplished some great historical moment. I hope you enjoy it. I really do, because after the eloquent speeches and the tributes of “how far we’ve come” and warm fuzzy feelings - we have a looong rough 4 years of reality ahead of us. Followed by many years of cleanup and, hopefully, recovery afterwards.
See you at the polls.
